He eluded them repeatedly and while fleeing took refuge at Kedarnath in the form of a bull. On being followed he dived into the ground, leaving his hump on the surface. The remaining portions of Lord Shiva appeared at four other places and are worshipped there as his manifestations. The arms appeared at Tungnath, the face at Rudranath, the belly at Madhmaheshwar and his locks (hair) with head at Kalpeshwar. Kedarnath and the four above-mentioned shrines are treated as Panch Kedar.

There are many other temples in the township. The most important is the temple of Nri Singh with the idol of Lord Vishnu. The left arm of this deity is getting destroyed with time and the popular belief holds that the day the arm completely withers, Badrinath valley will cease to exist and the Gods will transfer the residence into the neighboring Niti Valley at Bhavishya Badri.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chardham Yatra with Gaumukh Trek
Find quick answers to the most common questions asked by pilgrims planning their 2026 journey. As a local Chardham tour operator in Haridwar, we provide updated and local advice for a smooth trip.
Q1: Is the Gaumukh trek harder than the Kedarnath trek?
Yes, Gaumukh is much rougher and lonelier. The path to Kedarnath is a steep, crowded road with lots of horses and people to help you. The path to Gaumukh is a rocky, unpaved dirt trail through wild mountains where horses are not allowed.
Q2: Do I need a special pass for the Gaumukh trek?
Yes, you need a special forest permit from the government. The government only allows a few people inside the park each day to protect the glacier, so passes sell out fast. When you book with us, our team gets all your passes and registrations done for you.
Q3: Which is the best month to book this tour?
May, June, September, and October are the best months. You must avoid July and August because heavy rains cause dangerous landslides and floods on the mountain roads. By November, heavy snow covers everything and the temples close.
Q4: Will I have breathing problems on this trip?
You might feel dizzy or breathless because the mountains are very high. Our 11-day trip moves slowly and stops at different heights to help your body get used to the thin air. It is smart to carry small oxygen cans, drink lots of water, and ask your doctor before coming.
Q5: Can old people or kids do the Gaumukh trek?
Older people can visit the main temples using horses or helicopters, but they should not do the Gaumukh trek. The walking path has loose rocks and very cold winds. Only people who are fit and used to walking in the mountains should do it.
Q6: What food do I get in the MAPI meal plan?
This plan gives you your hotel room, daily breakfast, and daily dinner. Lunch is not included because you will be out travelling or walking during the day. All the food served at the hotels is clean, fresh, and strictly vegetarian.
Q7: Can I get mobile network or internet during the trek?
Signals are very weak or absent in the mountains. You will get a normal network in cities like Haridwar and Uttarkashi. However, once you start trekking towards Bhojbasa and Gaumukh, your phone will have no network at all. BSNL works best in some parts of Kedarnath and Badrinath.
Q8: What kind of clothes should I pack for this trip?
Pack heavy woolens and a waterproof jacket. The weather in the mountains changes fast. Even in summer, nights are very cold, and temperatures can drop near 0 degrees. You also need good walking shoes with a strong grip for the rocky trails.
Q9: Can I hire a horse or a local helper at the spot?
Yes, you can hire them at the starting points of Yamunotri and Kedarnath. If you feel tired, you can pay for a horse or a doli (sitting chair) right there. But remember, for the Gaumukh trail, horses are limited by the government, so you must walk.
Q10: Is the water safe to drink on the trails?
Do not drink open river water directly. Always buy sealed mineral water bottles at the local shops or carry water purification tablets with you. Staying hydrated is the best way to avoid headaches and tiredness in high altitudes.
